During the late 1800s, the Elgin National Watch Company offered a variety of society and sporting dials, designed to personalize the watch to suit a particular customer. The "society" dials were more popular than the "sporting" options, with elaborate symbolic designs representing fraternities such as the Freemasons, Odd Fellows, and Knights or Pythias. In 1889, this special catalog was distributed as compilation of the special dials available at the time. Despite the company's marketing efforts, sales were unimpressive. As a result, watches with these dials are difficult to acquire, especially in good condition.
